Blending IFS with AF-EMDR for Deeper Emotional Healing

by

Many people carry emotional patterns that feel like they’re part of their very identity — old fears, self-criticism, or anxieties that show up in relationships and daily life. Often, these patterns are rooted in attachment experiences from childhood.

At The Listening Room, I use Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) to help clients process these early experiences and heal attachment wounds. For some, combining AF-EMDR with Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy can provide an even deeper level of understanding and change.

What Is IFS?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that recognises we all have different “parts” of ourselves. Some parts may carry fear, shame, or anger, while others hold hope, curiosity, or strength. Often, we feel stuck when protective or critical parts take over.

IFS helps you:

  • Notice and name your different parts.
  • Understand their role in protecting you or coping with past experiences.
  • Develop compassion for parts that may seem disruptive or negative.

How AF-EMDR and IFS Work Together

AF-EMDR helps process past attachment-related trauma, reducing the emotional intensity that keeps old patterns alive. IFS complements this by:

  • Identifying the parts of you that carry unresolved attachment pain.
  • Helping you develop a compassionate relationship with these parts.
  • Strengthening your sense of “Self” — the calm, curious, and grounded part of you that can lead your internal system.

By combining these approaches, clients can experience both emotional release and internal harmony, creating lasting shifts in how they relate to themselves and others.

What Clients Often Notice

People who integrate AF-EMDR and IFS report:

  • Feeling lighter, with less emotional reactivity.
  • Greater clarity about why they respond in certain ways.
  • Increased self-compassion and patience with themselves.
  • Healthier, more secure connections in relationships.

Taking the Step Toward Healing

Healing old attachment wounds is possible. By combining the processing power of AF-EMDR with the internal insight of IFS, clients can move from patterns of fear, withdrawal, or criticism to a place of safety, self-awareness, and emotional freedom.

If you recognise these patterns in yourself and would like guidance, I offer a safe, supportive space at The Listening Room to explore AF-EMDR and IFS. Together, we can help you feel more secure, balanced, and connected.
